영화는 전체적으로 6개의 섹션으로 나누어진다.
즉, '외눈박이Mads Mikkelsen 와의 무조건적인 대결 혹은 분노(wrath)로부터 시작하여
고원지대로 끌고 가다가 모두 외눈박이에 의해 죽고, 기독교 십자군들을 만나며 그의 정체(silent warrior)를 궁금해 하던
그들에게 뭔지 모를 영감을 불러 넣어 주면서(men of god ) 상류에 도착한 후(the holy land)
새로운 성지를 건설하려 하지만 모두 죽고(hell) 그곳 원주민들에 의해 외눈박이마저 희생된다(the sacrifice)'
그 속에서 영화는 핏빛 낭자한 외눈박이가 하늘을 쳐다보는 모습이나 핏빛으로 물든 산천을, 어쩌면 아름답게, 보여준다.
결국은 새로운 성지 건설이라는 명분하의 이교도 개종에 대한 것으로 밖에 되지 않는다.
그것을 괜히 어렵게, 잔인한 폭력을 통해, 별다른 설명없이, 느릿느릿 보여줄 뿐이다.
액션, 어드벤처로 분류되었다고 해서 대단한 전사의 등장이나 왠지 모를 환타지적 요소를 기대한다면 중간에 포기하게 될 것이다.
