In the 1980s when the Irish civil conflict was at its most treacherous, 22 year old Martin McGartland was recruited by the British police to infiltrate and spy on the IRA. 1980년대 중반, 아일랜드 민중항쟁이 가장 불안정한 시기에 22살의 마틴 맥가트랜드(Jim Sturgess)는 영국 경찰에 의해 IRA에 잠입하여 스파이 활동을 하게 된다.

Marty McGartland is a 22-year-old street hustler from Ireland, living in the 1980s.
마티 맥가트랜드는 1980년대를 살고 있는 아일랜드 출신의 22살 길거리 정의파이다.
He gets noticed by the Provisional Irish Republican Army|, but thinks their cruel justice is no good.
그는 지역 IRA에 의해 주목받고 있었으나 마티는 그들의 잔혹한 정의가 정당치 않다고 생각한다.
The British want to use Marty as well, because of his connection to the community undetected.

The British police want him to infiltrate and spy on the IRA. Marty decides to work for the police because of his IRA dislike. 영국 경찰은 그에게 IRA에 침투하여 스파이 활동을 해 주길 원했고 마티는 IRA에 대한 혐오 때문에 협조하기로 한다.
He soon forgets his political preferences when his powerful position takes over.
그는 자신의 강력한 입지로 인해 곧 자신의 정치적 선택을 잊게 된다.
Despite fearing that the IRA will find out about his spying, he builds up a new sense of self esteem.
IRA가 자신의 스파이 활동을 눈치챌 것을 두려워함에도 불구하고 그는 자기자신의 의지를 확고히 한다. 
Afraid his family and friends will be murdered if they are informed, Marty starts to lead a double life.

Things start to take their toll when the British sell them out.  영국인들이 배반하여 희생이 따랐을때 일은 시작된다.
They explain their system could fall down and reveal Marty was their bait all along.
그들은 자신들의 시스템이 붕괴될 수 있어 마티가 그들의 미끼 노릇을 해왔음을 누설하게 된다.
The IRA capture and torture Marty, but he is able to escape. IRA가 마티를 사로잡고 고문하였으나 그는 도주할 수 있게 된다.
His best friend and former British police colleague,Fergus(Ben Kingsley), finds Marty and decides to help him hide. 그의 절친한 친구이자 전 영국경찰이었던 퍼거스가 마티를 찾아내고 그의 은둔을 돕기로 결심한다.
Marty knows the IRA will turn to his family and is forced to make a decision, saving himself or his beloved ones.  마티는 IRA가 그의 가족들을 표적으로 삼을 수 있기에 자신을 살릴 것인지 사랑하는 사람들을 살릴 것인지에 대해 결심을 해야만 했다.

2003년, '스티븐 보고서'에 따르면 7~80년대 민간인 대량학살은 영국과 통일론자들의 결탁에 의한 것으로 밝혀졌다.
또한, 같은 해 40여명을 살해한 IRA 고위간부가 영국을 위해 일해왔음이 밝혀졌다.
2007년, 서로 대치하던 통일론자들과 공화당은 처음으로 얼굴을 맞대고 평화협정을 체결한 뒤,
공동정권을 출범하기로 합의했다.
몇 주만 주둔해도 충분했을 영국군은 38년만에야 북아일랜드를 떠났다.
런던의 정보부 고위층에 따르면 마틴의 영웅적 활약으로 IRA의 표적이었던 50여명의 사람들이 목숨을 구했지만
마틴은 다시는 가족을 볼 수 없게 되었다.
마틴은 여전히 도망중이다.
